Prosthetics & Orthotics

The Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics provides Rehabilitation Service to the persons with locomotor disabilities. The disabilities caused by various factors like trauma, diseases, genetic causes etc . The disability can involve Lower and Upper Limbs o0r spine . The Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics designs, fabricates and fits latest and light weight Prosthetic and Orthotic appliances to the persons with disabilities utilizing the material available in the country.

Since one of the major activities of the Institution is to fabricate Prosthetic and Orthotic aids and appliances for catering services to the Persons with Disabilities on free or subsidized rates to the needy disabled. Prosthetic and Orthotics deals with the fitment of artificial limbs for the missing parts of human body and assistive devices for supporting the weakened parts of the body. The aids and appliances are provided under the ADIP scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India. A new material called rigid polyurethane foam, which is a substitute of the willow wood, is introduced. This is used for artificial limbs. It makes the weight of the prosthesis light. The qualified Prosthetist / Orthotist have been engaged in the workshop, which has yielded in a more scientific approach towards the design and development of the Prosthetic & Orthotic appliances. A good numbers of below knee endoskeleton prosthesis have been fitted to a number of amputees. This type of prosthesis is quick to fabricate and is light in weight in comparison to the conventional prosthesis. The internee students of DPO/CPO are imparting training in this Department.
